What Is BYOK?
BYOK stands for "Bring Your Own Keys" — you use your own API credits from AI providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Black Forest Labs. AniAvatar provides the platform, user interface, and all features, but for the actual AI processing, you use your own API key.
This sounds more complicated than it is. In practice, it means: you add your API key once in the settings, and AniAvatar uses it for all generation tasks.
Why BYOK Instead of Monthly Subscriptions?
The Problem with Credit-Based Subscription Models
Many AI tools sell you monthly credit packages. The concept: you pay, say, $49/month for 500 credits. What often remains unclear:
- What exactly does one credit cost?
- What happens to unused credits at month's end?
- How expensive is this compared to direct API costs?
In most cases, the markup is enormous. An avatar image with GPT Image 1 costs approximately $0.04–0.08 directly at OpenAI. In a credits model, you often pay $0.20–0.50 per image — 5–10 times more.

Security: How Does AniAvatar Store Your API Keys?
This is the most common question about the BYOK model, and it's a valid one.
API keys are sensitive data. AniAvatar uses the following security measures:
AES-256-GCM encryption: API keys are encrypted before storage in the database. The encryption key is stored separately from the database key.
Minimal exposure: Keys are decrypted only at the moment of the API request and immediately discarded. They are never stored in logs or shared with third parties.
Audit trail: Every use of your API key is logged (timestamp, model, action). You can always see what your key was used for.
Revoke function: You can delete your API key from AniAvatar at any time and replace it with a new one.
When Is BYOK Not Ideal?
BYOK isn't perfect for every use case:
For very low usage volumes: If you only need 5–10 avatars per month, the setup effort may not be worthwhile. In this case, a simple credits model might be more convenient.
For users without technical background: Setting up API keys requires a few minutes and an account at OpenAI or other providers. For less tech-savvy users, this can be a barrier.
For everyone else — especially teams, agencies, and regular users — BYOK is clearly the better choice.

What happens if my API credits run out? AniAvatar detects API errors and notifies you immediately. Generation tasks are not lost; you simply need to top up your OpenAI/BFL credits.
Can I use different API keys for different projects? Currently there is one API key per provider per account. Team-specific keys are on the roadmap for Q2 2026.
